Kyla’s JOGA Story
Sport and movement have been intertwined in to my entire life. As a child, my main interest was figure skating and spent countless hours training on and off the ice. I have remained on the ice as an instructor for over 25 years, specializing in learn to skate and power skating. I have always remained active with skating, skiing, running, and any activity to keep up with my kids!
As a power skating instructor my philosophy has been to focus on the basics of skating. Skating is more than how fast the feet are moving – in order to increase speed the technique must focus on full stride, core strength and the force of the push. When you focus on stability you gain mobility.
I had heard of JOGA and always knew that this yoga for jocks was something I needed to learn more about. When COVID 19 happened in 2020, I suddenly found myself with more time on my hands than I could have ever imagined imagine and no on ice training. I followed the nudge of my heart and took the JOGA online training and quickly realized that this movement system aligned with my on ice practices and added a mental component, with a focus on breath and the ability to remain calm and non reactive in moments of high stress (ie game play). Navigating various off ice training programs can be overwhelming and the information related to the correlation of the training to on ice benefits is scarce. JOGA provides that sport specific ‘why’ throughout the entire program.
As a mom of 3 elite hockey players I am passionate that JOGA is a great addition to all training programs for any athlete! JOGA truly is for everyBODY!
