WHY I CHOSE JOGA

MY JOGA STORY

My passion for Joga comes from my own past athletic experiences. I was a competitive figure skater & soccer player, and also played field hockey and was a sprinter in track in high school. I suffered numerous injuries, and I never was really doing anything training wise for my mobility/stability. I wasn’t doing anything for myself mentally as well, and when faced with a lot of injuries, confidence is hugely affected by this, and can take a big mental toll.  I wish I had Joga when I was in my prime as an athlete, as it would have helped me both physically & mentally be a better athlete overall. I have never been flexible (even as a figure skater), and the Joga program doesn’t care if you can touch your toes or get into bendy positions-and that’s what I love about it.

I continued my love for athletics and obtained my degree in Bachelor of Applied Health Sciences in Exercise Science & Health Promotion, becoming a Registered Kinesiologist, and also a NCCP Figure Skating Coach.  And then I became a Joga Coach!  I continue to stay active through a variety of sports/activities, and adding Joga into the mix has helped me continue to be a stronger, well rounded athlete.

My goals for the athletes that I coach is to provide them with a space to recover both mentally and physically, and provide them with a program that is built for their athletic bodies, that will enhance their performance. I want to help athletes achieve their athletic goals, both mentally & physically, and both in and out of their sport.  Being a Joga coach I am able to work with athletes “behind the scenes”, and watch them improve, grow, succeed, and conquer.

TESTIMONIALS

“JOGA targets golfer's mobility and general robustness given a lot of isometric movements, therefore helpful for injury prevention. It would also help golfers motor control and their awareness of being able to move and isolate certain areas of the body, for example being able to differentiate pelvic vs. spinal movements. JOGA and a max strength/power program would give all golfers the elements needed to improve driving distance/club head speed, and ultimately their game.”

WHY I CHOSE JOGA

MY JOGA STORY

Supporting athletes in my various roles as a sports chiropractor, athletic trainer and JOGA Coach has been my career for over 20 years.

The JOGA system, designed with the understanding of how athletes move as they compete and train, has proven to be an invaluable resource with a variety of applications.  Whether the goal is to build strength and joint stability in foundation postures to gain mobility or as part of a scheduled active recovery day, the varying intensities and low impact nature of this training is well suited for both amateur and professional athletes.

Primarily working with high performance athletes in contact sports like hockey and lacrosse, has proven to me how essential preparation is to success. As needed, I coordinate and structure JOGA sessions with Strength & Conditioning Coaches, Medical & Training staff and Technical Skills Coaches to support both in-season and off-season fitness goals for the athlete or team. The ability to manage workloads, modify programming for injury and support an active recovery plan are just a few of the benefits that motivated me to become a JOGA Coach.

TESTIMONIALS

“As an active father of three and grandfather of four, I was looking for something to improve my physical condition. My friend, Carlie, invited me to try out her JOGA class. Traditional Yoga never really worked for me, so I was a bit apprehensive to try Joga. After my first class, I immediately realized that my range of motion, stability, core strength, and breathing techniques were in need of improvement. I have been extremely happy with the results I have experienced over the last year. My lower back pain has virtually disappeared and I feel so much stronger and centered. I recover faster and I can do the sports I love better. Thank you, Carlie. You have inspired me to be my best self.”

TESTIMONIALS

“My son is a 2010 hockey goalie. Despite participating in goalie clinics and camps, we noticed him sometimes struggling with balance and stability when moving in the net. In one of his goalie camps, he was introduced to yoga - he understood the benefits, but wasn't really a fan. Recently, he was introduced to Joga by Carlie Chiovetti, a fellow goalie's mom. He took his first class via Zoom and said he thought it was helpful. However, as an observer, I saw how much he struggled with poses introduced virtually and asked Carlie if she could work with him in-person. Carlie provided hands-on instruction, made corrections to his positioning, and introduced poses and stretches that benefit and challenge him as an athlete, specifically as a goalie. After two in-person sessions, he is already seeing/feeling progress and believes Joga has definite benefits. As his parent, I already see improvements in his balance, posture, stability, and focus - not just in the net, but overall. Joga has provided my son with a way to enhance his athletic performance and build skills off the ice, while keeping his mind engaged. Thank you, Carlie and Joga!”

WHY I CHOSE JOGA

MY JOGA STORY

My love for competitive sports was developed in my youth as a champion on the National Iranian Gymnast team.

After completing her bachelor degree in physical education and sports science, she worked as a gymnastics coach, swimming teacher, and group fitness instructor in Tehran. During this period, Rozita coached the national Iranian gymnastics B team, which ranked second for two consecutive years.

Moving to Dubai, Roshan became a physical education teacher in a private school for 5 years prior to landing in Vancouver BC where she settled and continued to developer her career.Throughout the past 15 years in Vancouver, Rozita has maintained her certification with Gymnastics BC and has earned the respect and admiration of athletes and their parents as a competitive (Flicka and Balance) and recreational (West Vancouver Recreation Centre) gymnastics coach.

After suffering a knee injury and going through physio and rehab exercises to overcome her injury, Rozita inadvertently took part in a Joga (Yoga for athletes) class at Steve Nash Sports Club and discovered that it helped her to cope with her chronic knee pain. Recognizing Rozita was an advanced student who exhibited a love for the classes, the instructor encouraged her to become a certified Joga coach.  Shortly thereafter, Roshan completed the coaches training and is now a certified Joga coach and has launched classes in the Vancouver area.

WHY I CHOSE JOGA

MY JOGA STORY

After teaching yoga for a few years, I knew I was missing information that could make my classes more effective. I attended the JOGA certification in 2015 and found what I was looking for, in a language that made sense to me and it was packaged in a system that not only shone a light on individual weaknesses and imbalances but offered the tools to correct them.

Being able to help athletes take care of their bodies and minds inspired me to become a Head Coach with JOGA so I can train other coaches to do the same. I’m excited to help grow the JOGA team both locally and globally.

“Lisa was an important member of our CFL Ottawa REDBLACKS High Performance Team during my time as the Head Athletic Therapist. Lisa introduced JOGA to our football players and it was an instant hit because of Lisa’s coaching and technical skills - she truly inspired them.  There’s no doubt Lisa significantly contributed to our players health and wellness. She’s a great team player and I to this day continue to recommend her skills and services. Some of Marcelo’s career highlights include: CFL Ottawa REDBLACKS (2014-2019), NHL Ottawa Senators Hockey, CFL Toronto Argonauts, OHL Ottawa 67s, and USPORT Carleton and York University, Humber College”

TESTIMONIALS

“Joga was like a blast of fresh air, a no-nonsense approach to strength, breath and flexibility without the mystic underpinnings of Yoga. Not that there is anything wrong with that but coming to the studio to improve my breathing on the bike, Joga seemed to be a better fit. The strength benefits of a regular practice are evident, but the real payoff is the ability to focus on the calming rhythm of the breath while everything is on fire.  I’ve noticed that my recovery time between activities has decreased, and I know all too well that the extent and duration of injuries is lessened due to the increased flexibility that comes with regular practice. Lisa is an incredible teacher, interesting and thoughtful.  She infuses her classes with energy, humour, and a genuine interest in the development of her students\athletes. She has an uncanny ability to tailor a class to meet the needs of individual students while delivering a challenging workout for the whole class. Don’t be fooled by her pleasant demeanor; she watches her students like a hawk, and her verbal cues are eerily precise. Very Highly Recommended, 110%”

Phil Desmarais, Cyclist

TESTIMONIALS

“As an athlete in my early 60s, I have occasionally had injuries and issues that needed to be taken into account when doing Joga. Lisa has been able to modify and personalize my sessions to both accommodate for the issue and offer ways to strengthen and improve mobility of the areas involved. As a coach, she always manages to get you working hard while still making her sessions enjoyable, non-judgmental and effective. Lisa's knowledge of and passion for Joga is clearly evident in her classes.”

I consider JOGA a secret weapon because my body is in pain during the workout but I know that the pain is what will make me stronger. My JOGA coach, Carlie Chiovetti, is awesome. She is great at teaching all of the exercises and really cares that we are making improvements every week to help me be a stronger athlete.”
